Dye Lab/Technical Manager with Chemist support

Our Client is a global leader in end-use market sales of Fabrics for Swimwear, Activewear, Intimate Apparel, Ready-to-Wear, theatrical costumes, and all segments of the Printed Fabric Industry. Specializing in wide and narrow warp knit elastic fabrics, our client is looking for a Dye Lab/Technical Manager in the North East and is open to relocation.

Reporting to the Director of Manufacturing, the Technical Manager’s primary responsibility is to provide technical expertise to the Fabrics Color Laboratory, Dye House and Finishing Departments. Responsible for oversight of the dyeing and finishing operations. Provide technical expertise to R&D and Quality, whether for new product development or to resolve a quality/customer dispute.

Primary Responsibilities and Duties:

  • The Technical Manager will effectively handle employee requests and issues as they arise, as well as requests from external and internal customers
  • Ensure compliance with Government Environmental regulations as they pertain to waste water, air and the dyes and chemicals used at facilities, this includes town, state and federal reporting, permit/licensing and compliance
  • Develop new processes as well as troubleshoot existing processes to improve performance, efficiencies and costs
  • Work closely with the Dye Chemist on dye formulations and shade and color fastness performance that meets customer requirements
  • Apply a high sense of urgency when a new or existing product has quality problems
  • Determine priorities based on orders and accept direction and input as necessary from planning, sales, R&D, QA
  • Understanding of regulatory compliance and ability to provide documentation to customers, this would include, but not be limited to, SDS sheets for fabrics produced, RoHS, REACH, CA proposition 65, and AZO dye ban and any technical documents required by sales for customers
  • Use, and be familiar with, Textile industry supply chain to aid in product development and raw material procurement
  • Cultivate network of industry vendors and suppliers and utilize their technical resources including technical people and their labs
  • Lead new product evaluation by working closely with R&D, Finishing and Dyehouse, and remain actively involved in the life of the trial
  • Provide input to Production for proper sign off on trial
  • Participate in presentations to customers with sales force
  • Support ISO9001:2015 by applying policies and procedures that comply with the department audit requirements
  • Execute proper document control and ensure employees in the department are performing their jobs according to the documented Roles and Responsibilities
  • Maintain hourly employee staffing levels within the department as required to avoid interruption in the Lab Operation
  • Participation in weekly Quality and Production meetings
  • Train laboratory and production personnel to build and strengthen the employees’ skill set
  • Maintain and enforce Company policies and procedures as stated in the employee handbook
  • Ensure proper accident and incident processing and reporting steps are followed
  • Manage and direct the work of the Color Lab Manager and Process Engineer


  • B.S. degree in Textile Science or Chemistry
  • Minimum 5 years of technical management experience in textiles
  • Previous experience in a textile manufacturing or related industry required
  • Knowledge of color and textile colorfastness tests
  • Knowledge of warp knit elastic fabrics and warp knit fabric processing a plus
  • Experience working with nylon/spandex and polyester/spandex dyeing and finishing preferred
  • Working knowledge of DataColor Spectrophotometer
  • Understand dyeing equipment including Jets, A-Beams, P-Beams, Continuous Calender and Continuous Pad/Steam, Ahiba
  • Proficient with operation of all laboratory equipment
  • Understand what drives profitability to the business and able to manage and control those activities required
  • Sense of urgency is a must particularly as it relates to achieving a technical resolution to a customer/product issue, quality issue or new development
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to interact with varying levels within the organization, and able to present him/herself as a technical resource to customers in positive and/or stressful situations
  • Possess strong problem solving, decision-making skills and organizational skills
  • Strong computer skills to include Microsoft Office programs
  • Strong work ethic and high level of professionalism required
  • Strong training and mentorship skills
