Lead Designer - Soft Goods Products

Location: Santa Barbara, CA Area

Our client is an employee owned company with amazing benefits, including free yoga once a week. They are in pursuit of a Lead Designer to develop the next generation of safety products. You will get to design and develop high quality and innovative soft good products, including bags, and packs.

oDrive innovation through materials, technology integration, and advanced
manufacturing methods
oCreate and implement a cohesive design language across our soft goods
product portfolio
oDesign products and collections around coherent themes, functions, prices,
etc., understanding product designs in relation to the brand
oDevelop and create illustrations and technical drawings for new design
concepts and digital renderings of materializations in CAD and/or other
design programs, detailing concept, materials & development specifications
oResearch and communicate current and developing market trends and their
impact on new product designs
oAnalyze competitive markets & trends for products and categories, combining
all necessary trend, material, and market research into viable products
oDevelop semi-annual trend forecast and presentations
•Project Management:
oOwn and drive product development timelines forward, hitting quality and
margin targets, and integrating with other teams within the company to
ensure that our products meet broader company objectives
•Detail and process-oriented:
oOwn the on time and quality approved implementation of product innovations
oBrainstorm to identify soft goods product concepts in line with brand
oPrepare concept sketches and renderings for presentation and review
oProduce CAD drawings and product specification for prototype development and
oPrepare control drawings, taking engineering requirements and manufacturing
into consideration
oUse familiarity with manufacturing methods and materials for prototyping and
design iteration
oUse physical prototyping to bring life to ideas, inform design decisions,
and drive the process forward
oUse concept prototypes to develop production designs that are functional,
innovative and able to be competitively manufactured either in house or
outsource facilities
•Collaboration & Communication:
oSuccessfully present and communicate concepts to the Engineering, Product,
Operations and Marketing departments
oPartner with cross-functional teams and outside vendors to insure product
integrity and marketing objectives
•Continuous Improvement:
oEnsure products are on the cutting edge
oBe a lifelong learner

Skills Knowledge and Abilities:
•Understanding and experience leading soft goods development through the manufacturing process
•Knowledge of soft goods construction, material construction and performance properties, pattern making, costing, embroidery, and trim applications
•Detailed & organized with ability to handle high volume while maintaining quality
•Experience with technical design documentation packages and Quality Assurance processes
•Innovative mindset with a passion for creative and disruptive ideas that will create the future for our soft goods
•Ability to envision design & manufacturing “what-ifs” with a fresh new perspective
•Skilled at removing barriers to make us a nimbler business and organization
•Ability to develop a deep knowledge of our product, services, and history
•Strong written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work with people of at all levels
•Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from management, clients, and customers
•Ability to work autonomously and in a team environment
•Ability to work in an ad hoc environment and be willing to “roll-up your sleeves”
•Ability to build relationships with internal and external customers
•Experience with product and material testing desired

Qualifications (Education and Experience):
•BS/BA degree in Industrial Design, or equivalent degree preferred or relevant work experience
•5+ years of proven commercial success designing technical soft goods products
•Portfolio demonstrating strong design excellence, forward visual thinking and superior problem solving
•Experience with Solid works or other 3D CAD programs
•Experience with Adobe Design Suite, Photoshop, Illustrator or design programs
•Valid Driver’s License with an insurable DMV record required
•U.S. Passport desired
